Story

We traveled from Germany to Oulu to see the aurora borealis and attend the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture 2026. Unfortunately, on the evening (January 18, 2016) when we wanted to see the aurora and went out onto the frozen Baltic Sea with a guide, we saw nothing but a very faint, barely visible greenish streak. Very disappointing! 
A few days later, we returned from a day trip to Rovaniemi and as we got off the train and walked to the hotel, there it was! Right above the city of Oulu and even visible despite the many lights of the city around us. Of course, our camera equipment was stowed away, so we could only use our cell phones to take photos! Still, it was a great experience!
