G3 geomagnetic storm watch for 4 and 5 June

Finally some action from the Sun! Arctic latitudes on the northern hemisphere might be enjoying the midnight sun but lower latitudes and of course our friends down under should be alert of possible geomagnetic storm conditions later today and tomorrow.

Coronal hole faces Earth

A coronal hole is facing our planet today which is sending a high speed solar wind stream towards us which could cause enhanced geomagnetic conditions (and thus aurora!) in the days ahead.

M2.7 solar flare, CME arrival possible

A slow asymmetrical halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was launched yesterday during an M2.7 solar flare. Sunspot region 4392 near the central meridian was the source of the eruption.

Complex sunspot region 4366

Sunspot region 4366 has developed into a complex sunspot region with a magnetic Beta-Gamma-Delta layout. The region is impressive and has been producing strong solar flares today including two M5 events, two M6 events and even an X1.0 solar flare (R3-strong) that peaked at 12:33 UTC.

CME impact! S4 solar radiation storm

Impact! We just saw the arrival of the coronal mass ejection that was launched during yesterday's X1.9 solar flare. This means it took the CME only 25 hours to travel from the Sun to Earth. That is fast considering most CMEs take two to four days to travel this distance!

X1.9 solar flare with earth-directed CME

A long duration X1.95 solar flare (R3-strong) has peaked today at 18:09 UTC which came from sunspot region 4341. This region is located close to the center of the earth-facing solar disk. Quite a surprise to see such a strong solar flare today we must say!

Happy New Year! Celebrate with an M7.1 solar flare!

First of all, a happy new year to all of our visitors! Thank you for making 2025 an unforgettable year with all of your amazing feedback and support! As is a tradition in many places, our Sun also celebrates that we again survived another lap around the Sun. Fireworks today as the Sun produced a M7.1 solar flare (R2-moderate) which peakerd at 13:51 UTC.

M8.1 solar flare with earth-directed CME

Sunspot region 4299 produced an M8.1 solar flare (R2-moderate) which peaked at 20:39 UTC yesterday. Type II and type IV radio emissions were registered along with coronal dimming which are all typical signs that a coronal mass ejection was launched.

X1.9 solar flare, Coronal hole faces Earth

Welcome to December! New month, new solar activity! Sunspot region 4274 took center stage at the beginning of November with numerous X-class events and some gorgeous coronal mass ejections, some of which arrived at Earth and caused severe G4 geomagnetic storm conditions. However she is not done yet. This sunspot region survived its trip around the far side of the Sun and she is flaring again at the start of December but with a new number: 4299. This morning ex-4274 announced her return with an X1.9 (R3-strong) solar flare that peaked at 02:49 UTC!
