Solar activity has decreased and only one B-class flare was reported during last 24 hours. We can expect B-class flares in the coming hours, while isolated C-class flares are possible but not very probable. No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections have been detected, and the solar protons have remained at background level in the past 24 hours.
The Earth is presently inside the fast solar wind with the speed of about 730 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field magnitude has decreased and it now amounts around 5 nT. Due to the fast solar wind (up to 710 km/s) and long intervals of negative value of the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (down to -8 nT), strongly disturbed geomagnetic conditions were reported this night. The interplanetary K index had the value of K=5 almost constantly for more than 12 hours (only one interval of K=4 was reported during this time), and before the midnight of March 01 an interval of K=6 was reported by NOAA. The local station at Dourbes reported values of K=5. The geomagnetic conditions are presently unsettled to active and we expect them to stay so in the coming hours. The occasional intervals with the K index going up to 5 are still possible.
