The only active region, observed on the visible side of the Sun since morning of January 21, was numbered today and it is now NOAA AR 2733. During last 24 hours it has increased in size and complexity, presently having beta configuration of its photospheric magnetic field configuration. The flaring activity remained low, despite the presence of NOAA AR 2733. We expect such activity to persist in the coming hours, with a low probability for an isolated C-class flare. There were no Earth directed CMEs reported during last 24 hours and the solar protons remained at the background level.
The solar wind speed started to increase this morning and it is presently about 430 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field magnitude is about 8 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field, and its Bz component, increased and started to oscillate at about 23:30 UT on January 22, indicating arrival of the compression region between the slow and fast solar wind associated with the expected fast flow from the equatorial coronal hole which reached central meridian in the morning of January 19. The longer intervals of negative values of the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field have induced unsettled geomagnetic conditions around the midnight of January 22 and early this morning. Local station at Dourbes reported K=3. We expect unsettled to possible active geomagnetic conditions in the coming hours.
