There are presently two numbered sunspot groups observed on the visible side of the Sun, Catania sunspot groups 66 and 67 (NOAA ARs 2797 and 2798). During last 24 hours 10 B-class flares and 1 C-class flare were reported, all originating from the NOAA AR 2798. The C 1.4 flare which peaked at 12:53 UT on January 20 was associated with a slow CME. We expect B-class flares and occasional C-class flares in the coming hours. The filament eruption in the south-west quadrant of the Sun was associated with a rather narrow CME which is unlikely to arrive to Earth. During last 24 hours the proton flux levels remained at background values.
During last 48 hours the solar wind speed fluctuates around 340 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field magnitude is about 6 nT. Small but well defined, equatorial coronal hole of negative polarity (situated at the same latitudes but preceding the NOAA ARs 2797 and 2798) has reached the central meridian this morning. The associated fast solar wind can be expected at Earth late on January 24. The geomagnetic conditions are presently quiet and we expect quiet to possibly unsettled geomagnetic conditions in the coming hours.
