Bulletin

Over the past 24 hours solar activity has been low. The largest flares were B class flares. NOAA Active Region (AR) 2489 (Beta Dso) has been most active, producing all the B class flares. All visible ARs appear stable and have exhibited little flux emergence. There is currently a large Northern polar coronal hole which is moving into the Western hemisphere and may increase solar wind speeds over the coming days. No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been detected. Two small CMEs were observed, the first one emerged to the West at 11:24 UT yesterday (25-Jan-2016) with a speed of 306 Km/s as recorded by CACTUS. The second emerged to the East at around 19:00 UT with a speed around 550 Km/s. Neither are expected to hit the Earth. Solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with the possibility of C-class flares. The solar wind speed has decreased over the past 24 hours from 450 km/s to 350 km/s. The total magnetic field strength remained around 5 nT. The Bz component was mainly positive fluctuating between 0 and 2 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 0-1 (NOAA) and local K index 0-3 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours. A low latitude section of a large polar coronal hole has rotated into the Western hemisphere and the resulting high-speed stream (HSS) may enhance solar wind speeds and increase geo- activity in the coming days.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 064, based on 13 stations.
