Bulletin

Over the past 24 hours solar activity has been Low. No significant flares have been recorded. There are currently two ARs visible on the solar disk (2719 and 2720), but both have only shown activity at the B-class level, and HMI magnetogram observations indicate only a small amount of flux emergence and cancellation. These regions will reach the West limb in a couple of days. There is currently a large filament located in the North at central latitudes, but appears stable. The greater than 10MeV proton flux remained at background levels over the past 24 hours. Solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with a low probability of C-class flares and a low probability of M-class flares. The solar wind speed has fluctuated between 410 and 590 km/s over the past 24 hours. The total magnetic field strength has slowly decreased from around 20 to 4 nT. The Bz component was largely negative yesterday, reaching -15 nT, but this morning has fluctuated between -4 and +4 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 2-7 (NOAA) and local K index 1-6 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours. The enhanced geomagnetic conditions reached major storm levels on a planetary level due to the enhanced magnetic field with persistent Southward orientation associated with the passing of a magnetic cloud related to the 2018-Aug-20 CME. Conditions have since returned to background levels, however small enhancements may be experienced as the remnants of the CME pass Earth. There is currently a region of patchy coronal hole located near disk centre which may enhance solar wind speeds slightly over the next couple of days. Geomagnetic conditions are expected to be quiet to active.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 013, based on 16 stations.
