Bulletin

Solar activity was at very low levels. The Sun remained spotless. STEREO-A/COR2 coronagraphic imagery shows a coronal mass ejection (CME) departing from the Sun's west limb on 28 February (+/- 08UT). This slow CME may have an earth-bound direction, but no related solar disk features or SOHO/LASCO CMEs have been observed to confirm this. If arriving at Earth (around 04 March), at most active geomagnetic conditions are expected. No other earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been observed in available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values. A small and irregularly shaped equatorial negative polarity coronal hole (CH) is present on the solar disk.

Solar activity is expected to remain at very low levels.

Solar wind speed gradually increased from 350 km/s at the beginning of the period to near 500 km/s around 02:45UT, then to decline back to values around 430 km/s by the end of the period (ACE). Bz oscillated between -7 and +7 nT. The direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (phi angle) was predominantly directed away from the Sun until about 18:30UT, when it switched to a mostly negative sector (towards the Sun). These enhanced solar wind streams are most likely related to patchy CHs that were visible on the Sun over the last few days. Geomagnetic conditions were at quiet levels, with an unsettled episode (09-12UT) recorded at Dourbes.

Up to 02 March, geomagnetic activity is expected to be mostly at quiet to unsettled levels, with a chance on an active episode in response to the enhanced wind streams from patchy coronal holes.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 000, based on 14 stations.
