Bulletin

Solar activity was at low levels. NOAA Active Region 2924 (Catania group 1) produced a C2.7 flare peaking at 22:10 UT Jan 07. NOAA AR 2925 (Catania group 2) was stable. Two large active regions are expected to rotate onto the disk in the next day, increasing the flaring probability. Solar activity is expected to be at low levels with C-class flares likely and a slight chance of an M-class flare.

No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been observed in the available coronagraph data.

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal levels in the past 24 hours and is expected to remain so in the next 24 hours. The greater than 2MeV electron flux remained under the 1000 pfu threshold and is expected to just reach this threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24h electron fluence was at normal levels and is expected to be at normal levels over the next 24 hours.

The Solar wind parameters reflected a slow solar wind regime. The solar wind speed stabilized around 310 km/s. The total magnetic field magnitude oscillated around 5 nT, with a variable Bz component. The interplanetary magnetic field phi angle was predominantly in the positive sector (directed away from the Sun). The solar wind speed is expected to become slightly enhanced from Jan 09, due to the influence of the High Speed Stream (HSS) associated with the extension of the southern polar coronal hole that began to traverse the central meridian on Jan 05.

Geomagnetic conditions were quiet (NOAA Kp and local K Belgium 0-1) and are expected to be quiet on Jan 08. Unsettled conditions with possible isolated active intervals are expected on Jan 09 and Jan 10, due the HSS influence.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 048, based on 07 stations.
