Solar activity was low. Catania group 27 (NOAA 2506) produced the two largest flares of the period. A C1 flare peaking at 9:51UT and a B8 flare peaking at 19:56UT. 3 new regions were numbered by Catania. Two of them emerged on disk: group 28 (NOAA 2507) around N18W49 and group 29 (NOAA unnumbered) around S26E15. A third group (30) rotated on disk in the NorthEast. Neither of the new regions appears particularly complex. Solar flaring is expected to remain below C level although an occasional C flare remains possible. No Earth directed CMEs were recorded.
Solar wind conditions showed the passage of a sector boundary crossing into the positive sector before midnight with an associated period of increase of total magnetic field to around 13 nT. Bz was variable reaching down to -8nT. The sector boundary crossing also marked the start of a phase of continuous rise of the solar wind speed from near 300 km/s to 420 km/s. Solar wind speed is expected to rise somewhat further under the influence of the extensions of the northern polar coronal hole. Quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions were recorded (NOAA Kp 3 after midnight). As solar wind speed may become further elevated, further periods of unsettled geomagnetic conditions are possible.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 053, based on 08 stations.
