Bulletin

Over the past 24 hours solar activity has been low. The largest flare was a C2.7 class flare, produced from a region that has just rotated onto the East solar limb. Active Region (AR) 2583 (Macintosh class:Cao; Mag. type:Beta) has been most active, but has now moved onto the West solar limb, and will soon pass over the limb. All other ARs have shown low levels of activity. Solar protons have remained at background levels over the past 24 hours. No Earth directed CMEs were detected. Solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with a chance of C-class flares and a low probability of M-class flares. The solar wind speed has fluctuated between 400 to 480 km/s over the past 24 hours. The total magnetic field strength has slowly decreased from around 10 nT to 5 nT. The Bz component has oscillated between positive and negative, fluctuating between -10 and +8 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 2-4 (NOAA) and local K index 1-4 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours. A small trans-equatorial coronal hole located at central latitudes created enhanced solar wind speeds and geo-activity yesterday evening. A large positive polarity Northern polar coronal hole extending toward low latitudes has just passed into the Western hemisphere. The resulting High Speed Stream (HSS) will enhance solar wind speeds in a couple of days, which may increase geomagnetic activity.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 077, based on 28 stations.
