Bulletin

Solar activity is extremely low, without C-class flares reported. The only sunspot group observed during last two day, on the visible side of the sun, NOAA AR 2618, is presently at the west solar limb. We expect solar activity to remain on the same low level. The partial halo CME first seen in the SOHO LASCO C2 field of view at 03:36 UT on December 17 was a back side event and will not arrive to the Earth. No Earth directed CMEs were observed in the last 24 hours.

The solar wind speed is presently about 440 km/s, and the interplanetary magnetic field is 4nT. Due to longer intervals of negative value of the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (down to -8nT), active geomagnetic conditions were reported around midnight of December 17 and early morning today (local station at Dourbes reported K=4). The geomagnetic conditions are presently quiet to unsettled. We expect active conditions later today and tomorrow due to expected arrival of the fast solar wind associated with the low latitude extend of the northern polar coronal hole.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 034, based on 11 stations.
