Solar activity is very low and only one B-class flare was reported in the past 24 hours. We expect that solar activity will remain low with only isolated B-class flares possible in the coming hours. No Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections have been observed and the solar protons remained at background level in the past 24 hours.
The Earth is still inside the fast solar wind associated with the large coronal hole which reached central meridian on February 25. The solar wind speed is presently 720 km/s and the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude is about 5 nT. Due to the fast solar wind and the intervals of negative value of the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (about 710 km/s and -5 nT, respectively) strongly disturbed geomagnetic conditions were reported around midnight of March 02 (Dourbes reported K=5 and NOAA Kp=4) and today at about 09 UT (NOAA reported Kp=5 and Dourbes K=4). The geomagnetic conditions are presently unsettled to active and we expect them to stay so in the coming hours. Due to the still rather fast solar wind, longer intervals of the negative value of the Bz component might cause the occasional intervals with the K index going up to 5.
Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 050, based on 11 stations.
