Bulletin

Solar activity was at very low levels. A small sunspot region (McIntosh class: Bxo; MtWilson class: Beta) developed near S05E20 but is currently quiet. A filament in the NW quadrant near the northern polar coronal hole (CH) erupted starting on 4 August around 15:30UT. Most of the ejected material seems to be headed to the north of the ecliptic and to the west of the Sun-Earth line. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values.

Solar activity is expected to remain at very low levels.

Solar wind speed was steady near 315 km/s until the arrival of the co- rotating interaction region (CIR) followed by the high-speed stream (HSS) of the positive polarity coronal hole around 01:00UT. Solar wind speed increased until about 09:00UT, when speed values plateaued between 620 and 670 km/s (ACE). Bz oscillated between -21 and +10 nT until about 09:00UT, after which the variations became smaller between -12 and +11 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field (phi angle) was mostly directed away from the Sun.

Geomagnetic activity reached minor storming levels (Kp, K Wingst) in response to the CIR-HSS arrival. Mostly active to minor storming conditions are expected for 5 and 6 August, with a small chance on an isolated moderate storming period.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 013, based on 18 stations.
