Bulletin

The solar activity has been quiet over the past 24 hours. The Sun is currently spotless and the X-ray flux remained below B-level. Solar activity is expected to remain at low levels for the next 24 hours.

No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CME) were observed over the past 24 hours in the available coronagraph imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux remained at background levels over the past 24 hours and is expected to remain at low levels. A large low latitude coronal hole passed the central meridian of the Sun two days ago. A small bipolar magnetic region has emerged in the Eastern hemisphere of the Sun, and may produce flaring activity.

The Earth is currently under the influence of fast solar wind conditions, due to the High Speed Stream (HSS) from a Coronal Hole. The solar wind speed has fluctuated between 650 and 750 km/s. The total magnetic field strength has fluctuated around 6 nT over the past 24 hours. The Bz component fluctuated around 0 nT, but has been mainly negative throughout the morning, ranging between -6 and +6 nT (as recorded by ACE). Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 4-6 (NOAA) and local K index 3-5 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours.

The high solar wind speeds experienced over the past 24 hours are due to the HSS from a recurrent low-latitude equatorial coronal hole of positive polarity. Minor geomagnetic storms have been experienced as a consequence. The solar wind speeds are expected to abate over the coming day, but further sporadic enhanced geomagnetic conditions may be experienced.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 013, based on 14 stations.
