Solar activity report
Any mentioned solar flare in this report has a scaling factor applied by the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Because of the SWPC scaling factor, solar flares are reported as 42% smaller than for the science quality data. The scaling factor has been removed from our archived solar flare data to reflect the true physical units.

SDF Number 142 Issued at 2200Z on 22 MAY 1998IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 21-2100Z to 22-2100Z SOLAR ACTIVITY WAS VERY LOW. LITTLE OF SIGNIFICANCE
OCCURRED AS THE TWO ASSIGNED SPOTTED REGIONS, 8220 (S24W72) AND 8222
(N24W64) CONTINUED THEIR SLOW DECAY. THERE ARE PRELIMINARY REPORTS
OF SPOTS NEAR S18E74, MARKING THE RETURN OF OLD REGION 8210 (S17,
L-136). THAT REGION PRODUCED SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY (X-CLASS FLARES,
PROTON EVENTS) LAST ROTATION. ITS RETURN TO THE DISK WAS QUIET AND
UNEVENTFUL.

THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD WAS QUIET TO UNSETTLED. ENERGETIC ELECTRON FLUX
AT GEOSYNCHRONOUS ORBIT WAS AGAIN AT HIGH LEVELS.
