Bulletin

The solar activity has been at low levels over the past 24 hours. A new small bipolar sunspot has emerged in the North-West quadrant of the Sun (Catania sunspot group 26). No flaring activity has been observed in this region. The X-ray flux is below C-level. The solar activity is expected to remain at low levels with a small chances of C-class flare coming for the next 24 hours.

No earth-directed components were identified in the available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values.

The expected solar wind enhancement started on Jan 09 around 02:00 UTC due to the to the wind streams from the equatorial coronal holes that reached the central meridian on Jan 5. The solar wind speed increased from about 345 km/s to about 465 km/s. The total magnetic field reached 10.2 nT at 03:15 UTC, and the southern component of the magnetic filed fluctuated between -7.8 nT and 4.4 nT (as recorded by the ACE spacecraft). The enhanced solar wind conditions are expected to persist for the next 24-hour period.

Active geomagnetic conditions were observed with Kp-index (NOAA) equal 4 on Jan 9 at 06:00 UTC in response to the solar wind enhancement. Quiet to unsettle conditions is expected for the next 24 hours.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 016, based on 06 stations.
