Bulletin

The solar activity has been at low levels over the past 24 hours. The Catania sunspots group 26 (NOAA AR-2756) is now turning over the West limb, and the short-lived Catania sunspot group 27 has fully decayed. No significant flaring activity has been observed and the X-ray flux is below C-level. The solar activity is expected to remain at low levels for the next 24 hours.

No earth-directed coronal mass ejection was identified in the available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values.

The solar wind environment near Earth remained under the influence of the coronal hole streams. The solar wind speed ranged between 550 km/s to about 400 km/s with a slow global decrease, the total magnetic field fluctuated between 1 nT and 8 nT, and the southern component of the magnetic filed was between -5 nT and 5.5 nT (as recorded by the ACE spacecraft). We expect the solar wind parameters to return slowly towards an ambient background and slow solar wind speed regime in the next two days. Then we anticipate additional enhancements of the solar wind due to the high-speed streams from the positive polarity coronal holes that reached the central meridian on Jan 10.

Quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions were observed in response to the solar wind enhancement. Quiet to unsettle conditions is expected for the next 24 hours.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 000, based on 14 stations.
