Bulletin

Solar activity was at low levels with no recorded B or higher class flares in the last 24 hours. Catania Sunspot group 28 (NOAA Active Region 2757) has further developed on the disc and has crossed the central meridian. Solar activity is expected to remain at low levels with a 15% probability for a C class flare.

No Earth-directed CMEs have been observed in the available coronagraph imagery the past 24hours.

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values and is expected to remain so.

The solar wind speed was at nominal levels, ranging from around 300 to 350 km/s (ACE). The total magnetic field remained below 5 nT with Bz fluctuating between -4 nT and 4 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field was predominantly directed towards the Sun (negative phi angle). Minor enhancements of the solar wind speed are expected over the next 48 hours due to the influence of the patchy negative coronal hole, which was facing Earth on January 25th.

The geomagnetic activity over the past 24h has been quiet (NOAA Kp index ranging between 1 to 2) with an isolated unsettled interval where K Dourbes index was equal to 3. Quiet conditions with isolated unsettled periods are expected to continue during Jan 27-29 due to the foreseen enhancements of the solar wind.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 014, based on 14 stations.
