Bulletin

Solar activity was at very low levels. The Sun remained spotless. A coronal mass ejection (CME) visible in STEREO-A/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO coronagraphic imagery (both at their solar east limb) during the afternoon of 29 February has no earth-directed component. No earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been observed in available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values. A small equatorial positive polarity coronal hole (CH) is present on the solar disk.

Solar activity is expected to remain at very low levels.

The earth environment was under the influence of a high speed solar wind stream (HSS) associated with a negative polarity CH. Solar wind speed reached a maximum of 580 km/s around 19:45UT, and ended the period with values near 460 km/s (ACE). Bz oscillated between -6 and +6 nT until about 22UT, after which it varied between -3 and +3 nT. The direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (phi angle) was predominantly directed towards the Sun (negative sector). Geomagnetic conditions reached active levels near midnight.

For 1 and 2 March, geomagnetic activity is expected to be mostly at quiet to unsettled levels, with a decreasing chance on another active episode in response to the enhanced wind streams from small coronal holes. Active levels may be reached again on 4 and 5 March in response to the possible arrival of a weak CME (28 February) and the enhanced wind stream from the small positive polarity CH.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 000, based on 20 stations.
