Solar Active Regions and flaring

Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours with only C-class flares identified. A total of 6 numbered sunspot groups were identified on the visible solar disk. The strongest activity was a C2.8 flare (SIDC Flare 8260) peaking on July 23 at 15:12 UTC with estimated location S19E19. The flaring was not associated with any of the observed active regions. SIDC Sunspot Group 920 (NOAA Active Region 4493), currently located at N05W36, continues to be the largest region, classified as magnetic type beta-gamma. It has produced only low C-class flaring. SIDC Sunspot Group 886 (NOAA Active Region 4494), currently located at S02E34, has exhibited some flux emergence and growth and is now classified as magnetic type beta-delta. It has contributed to the low levels of activity. SIDC Sunspot Group 916 (NOAA Active Region 4489, magnetic type alpha) currently located at S07W71 has also produced an isolated low C-class flaring. SIDC Sunspot Group 923, currently located at N05E71, has rotated from over the east limb and is classified as magnetic type beta. It has been quiet. The remaining active regions are simple and have remained quiet. The solar flaring activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels over the next 24 hours with likely M-class flaring.

Coronal mass ejections

No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours. A slow and faint CME (SIDC CME 699) was first observed in LASCO/C2 coronagraph imagery around 04:49 UTC and in STEREO/COR2 around 04:38 UTC on July 24. The eruption appears associated with a C2.4 flaring and a weak dimming near S21E09. The bulk of the CME appears headed away from the Sun- Earth line. A minor glancing blow influence might be possible on July 28, but due to the weak nature of the CME it might be difficult to distinguish it in the solar wind data.

Solar wind

Over the past 24 hours the solar wind parameters (as measured by ACE at L1) have registered an increase in the solar wind speed mostly likely reflecting the previously expected pristine high speed stream arrival related to the negative polarity SIDC Coronal Hole 142. The solar wind speed increased up to 748 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field (B) remained moderately elevated with a maximum magnitude of 10.8 nT and a minimum north-south (Bz) component of - 8.5 nT. The B field phi angle remained predominantly in the negative sector (directed towards the Sun) reflecting the polarity of the geo-effective coronal hole. The solar wind parameters over the next 24 hours are expected to remain enhanced under the influence of the ongoing high-speed stream arrival.

Geomagnetism

The geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours have varied from quiet to minor storms levels with NOAA Kp index reaching values of 5+ and 5 in the intervals between 15 and 21 UTC on July 23. Quiet to active conditions were registered so far on July 24 and predominantly quiet to active conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours with small chances for isolated minor storms in case of prolonged periods with negative Bz. Predominantly quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on July 25 and a predominantly quiet conditions are expected on July 26 and July 27.

Proton flux levels

Over the past 24 hours the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was at nominal levels and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours.

Electron fluxes at geostationary orbit

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux as measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 was below the 1000 pfu threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to exceed the 1000 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours and the following days. The 24-hour electron fluence was at nominal levels and is expected to remain at nominal levels over the 24 hours and increase to moderate levels in the days after.
