Bulletin

Solar activity was very quiet in the past 24 hours. No flares were observed. The only numbered NOAA active region (AR) 2620 is rotating across the west solar limb. A slow moving CME observed at the east limb starting at 21:34 UT (21-Dec-2016) as detected by CACTUS is not expected to be geoeffective. Solar protons have remained at background levels over the past 24 hours. There are no significant Active Regions (AR) on the Sun, therefore solar activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours with a small chance of B-class flares. The solar wind speed has decreased from 720 km/s to 620 km/s over the past 24 hours. The total magnetic field strength has fluctuated between 4 nT and 7 nT. The Bz component has fluctuated between -5 nT and +5 nT. Geomagnetic conditions ranged between Kp index 3-4 (NOAA) and local K index 2-4 (Dourbes) over the past 24 hours, with the enhanced values occurring due to fluctuating Bz and high speed solar wind generated from a large positive polarity coronal hole (CH). Enhanced solar wind conditions are expected to persist over the next couple of days due to the CH High Speed Stream (HSS). As a consequence Geomagnetic conditions are expected to be unsettled to active for the next couple of days, with a possibility of minor storms.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 000, based on 14 stations.
